I’ve been working on the AudioBox analysis engine for quite a few years now!

It’s taken a long time to figure out how to get the type of tempo detection I was after. Most existing systems seem to work on the bass frequencies, which is fine for music with drums, but I was looking for an algorithm that would allow tempo detection across a much wider range of musical styles.

Every few months I had another bash at refining and refactoring the analysis engine using a multitude of ‘creative’ approaches, generally with mixed results.

Yesterday I dreamt up yet another algorithm to try and to my delight it actually works rather well!

I’ve packaged it up into what I hope will be the first in a new line of AudioBox products.

AudioBox Baby just features the analysis engine. As it’s the (free) baby of the family it doesn’t actually output anything – it’s older brethren will output via MIDI and possibly OSC – but it allows a first preview of the tempo detection in action.
